The factory 6l80 transmission thermostat is designed to keep fluid in the transmission until it opens up at about 190F degrees. While the 6l80 is a fairly stout transmission and can handle some abuse, keeping the transmission temp at or above 190F is (in our opinion) is less than optimal.On a 200+ mile trip this summer, towing my cargo trailer, with a 107 OAT, my transmission temp never exceeded 209 degrees. That's true in the OP's truck. However-in my 2018 GM decided to install a transmission thermostat at it's set at 190 degrees. It doesn't matter the winter weather-it still runs at 190 degrees.

Yup I've monitored the temp. Hottest its been ever is 190. Normally runs low 100's. When I'm towing i leave the trans temp display up 100% of the time anyways. Im gonna pop the pan and r&r the filter and fluid today as long as there is no metal in the pan.
